Sugar Maple Acer saccharum

Compact columnar selection of sugar maple with symmetrical growth and dense branching, ideal for limited spaces. Deep green foliage of summer turns an intense array of brilliant orange, red and golden yellow hues. An excellent selection for use as a street tree or in a small urban garden.
Northern Red Oak Quercus rubra

Shape: Pyramidal in youth, rounded at maturity Foliage: Glossy, dark green

Zone: 4-8  
The fastest growing oak and one of the easiest to transplant, this tree is great for street use or as a landscape tree. The foliage is dense and lustrous and leaves hang on the tree into winter. Named the 1999 Iowa Tree of the Year.
Paper Birch Betula papyrifera

Shape: Loosely pyramidal, rounded at maturity Foliage: Deep green

Zone: 2-7  
This very hardy birch is the most permanent and desirable of all the white-barked birches. Stems are a beautiful red-brown when immature, a perfect chalk-white when older. Fall color is an outstanding landscape feature. Clumps have three or more stems.
Candymint Crabapple Malus sargentii 'Candymint'

Shape: Wide, spreading Foliage: Purple tinged

Highly ornamental tree for smaller spaces. 'Candymint' bears profuse amounts of carmine buds that open to bright pink blossoms. The foliage has a purple tinge and darkens to bronze in autumn. The fruits are persistent and ripen to deep purple. The bark is red-orange resembling that of a cherry. Shows good disease resistance
Kelsey Crabapple Malus 'Kelsey'

Shape: Upright, rounded Foliage: Bronze-green

Zone: 2-7  
The purple-pink blooms of this Canadian crab have white markings at the base of each of its 16 petals. Named Manitoba's Centennial Tree, it bears bronze-green foliage and persistent, dark purple fruit.
Prairifire Crabapple Malus 'Prairifire'

This disease resistant cross by Dr. Dan Dayton, University of Illinois, has especially good foliage retention during summer. It blooms later than most crabs. The bark is a glossy dark red with numerous prominent lenticels, and the fruit does not drop. 1996 Iowa Tree of the Year.
Spring Snow Crabapple Malus 'Spring Snow'

This fruitless Canadian introduction is completely covered with pink buds that open to fragrant white flowers in spring. It has bright green, shiny foliage and good heat tolerance.
Pagoda Dogwood Cornus alternifolia

Shape: Rounded, horizontal branching Foliage: Medium to dark green
Fall Foliage: Red Exposure: Full Sun
Zone: 4-7  
This graceful small tree has pale yellow flowers in May, followed by blue-black fruit, and the leaves turn a beautiful maroon red in the fall. Branches grow in irregular tiers, forming a somewhat horizontal, layered look to the plant. Nebraska Statewide Arboretums' GreatPlants® 2000 Winner. Pot or plant under conditions of high humidity until growth is established.
Robinson Crabapple Malus robinson

Fall Foliage: Coppery-orange Exposure: Full Sun
Zone: 4-7  
The summer foliage of this crab is a bronze-green changing to a nice coppery-orange fall color which is held late into the season. It has excellent disease resistance, and attractive deep pink blooms. Hardy to -25°F, its persistent fruits provide winter food for birds.
European Mountain Ash Sorbus aucuparia

This valuable ornamental tree bears showy orange-red fruits in August through September. It prefers acid soils with good drainage.
Niobe Weeping Willow Salix alba 'Tristis'

Shape: Wide, spreading Foliage: Bright green
Fall Foliage: Yellow Exposure: Full Sun
Zone: 4-8  
This fast growing, golden barked willow has a wide spreading canopy and long, golden drooping branches. An extremely graceful tree, it prefers moist planting sites. To prevent dehydration and start buds to break on potted Niobe willow, the potted plants should be held in a greenhouse or a sheltered location until growth has started.
